How to Design a Really Effective Advertisement:

Follow these 10 simple guidelines and you will be well on your way to advertising fame and fortune… new clients will line up outside of your front door and the cash register will ring with sales all day long. Okay, we admit, this may be a bit of an exaggeration, but one thing is for sure… you will create a really great advertisement that will capture your customer’s attention!

  • Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create the biggest, most memorable impact in the shortest amount of time.
  • Keep your message short and to the point… the fewer the words the better. A short message coupled with a strong, relevant graphic works best.
  • A website address is a great way to encourage your target market to contact your company to learn more.
  • On average, people are going to look at your ad for between 4 and 5 seconds. Do not make the message too complicated nor the artwork too intricate.
  • Use bright, vibrant colours. Plain backgrounds with contrasting colours work best.
  • Get to the point! Shorter advertisements are most easily recalled by your target customer.
  • Be simple, yet engaging.
  • Easy to read fonts that contrast well against the background are critical.
  • Use only high-resolution logos, photos, and artwork.
  • You need a large image, a logo, a few words, your web address (or telephone number) and little else. Less is more.

The Coles Notes® version of the above you ask? The most effective advertisements are those created with small amounts of copy, easy to read fonts, well-designed contrasting colors and a strong, relevant graphic.
